1: Are you ready for a job?

Think about what you want from a job.
When are you able to work?
What are your other commitments?

There are a lot of reasons why it’s great to have a job. You get paid, but you can also gain maturity, independence, useful skills and experience, as well as the opportunity to meet new people.

Initial questions to get the ball rolling

When and where can you work?

Does it need to be local, near your school or home? Do you need to be able to get there by public transport? How many hours a week do you want to work? Think about your other commitments and how you could work around them.

Are you old enough to work?

Although it varies slightly from state to state, it’s compulsory to attend school or training until 15–17 years of age. But having a part-time job or working in the family business or farm is common. Every state and territory has slightly different rules for young workers, such as limiting the hours and duties of people under 15. Most large employers only hire people over 15 years.
