Ged Kearney, ACTU President

Gerardine (Ged) Kearney is the President of the ACTU.

Ged became a registered nurse in 1985, and has worked in many settings across the public and private acute sectors, predominantly in Melbourne, and has also been a nursing educator, including manager of the Clinical Nursing Education Department at Austin Health. She has a Bachelor in Education.

The year after qualifying as a registered nurse, she took part in the famous Victorian nurses’ strike of 1986 which resulted in substantial improvements to pay and conditions.

After being active in her union for many years, including holding the positions of Victorian Branch President and Federal President at the Australian Nursing Federation (ANF), she was elected as the ANF Federal Secretary in April 2008.

As ANF Federal Secretary, Ged oversaw substantial membership growth of the ANF.

Ged Kearney’s background in nursing and union experience, together with her experience as a working mother, gives her a strong personal insight into the demands facing working people.
